Plant Profile: Hairy Phlox (Phlox amoena)

Read in

1–2 minutes

While Hairy Phlox can be more difficult to find in the nursery trade, the hunt for it is well worth it. This plant is well-suited to dry and rocky areas, drought tolerant, and it puts on a beautiful show of pink or purple flowers. In general, Phlox species can be difficult to differentiate. If you can’t find Hairy Phlox near you, then I suggest looking for the more commonly sold Phlox pilosa.

Care requirements:

Light requirements: Full sun

Water requirements: Low-Medium

Soil requirements: Dry-Medium, well-drained

Bloom time: March-July

Bloom color: Pink, Purple

Height: 1 foot

Width: 0.5 feet

USDA Zone: 6-8

Other notes: Hairy phlox can tolerate part shade but best blooming will be in full sun.

About Me

I’m Emily, the creator and author behind this blog. When I first started trying to attract pollinators to my yard, everything pointed to native plants. I had to spend hours and hours researching what to grow because there was no central hub of information for new gardeners like myself. So I decided to create it. I hope my website helps you skip the research and get straight to planting.
